Flint is the Genesee County seat and the birthplace of General Motors. The Vehicle City arches, first raised in 1899, span Saginaw Street downtown. The Flint Cultural Center campus holds the Flint Institute of Arts, the second-largest art museum in Michigan, along with the Sloan Museum of Discovery and Longway Planetarium.

Saginaw grew as a lumber city on the Saginaw River and is the birthplace of Stevie Wonder. Its East Saginaw Historic Business District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Downstream, where the river meets Saginaw Bay, Bay City keeps three National Register historic districts, four movable bridges and the destroyer USS Edson, now a naval ship museum.
