Lansing has been the state capital since 1847, and the Michigan State Capitol, dedicated in 1879, is a National Historic Landmark. Old Town, on the Grand River at the north end of the city, is a historic commercial district that now serves as an arts and shopping area. Silver Bells in the City is the signature November holiday celebration and tree lighting.

East Lansing grew up around Michigan State University, where classes began in 1857. The campus holds the Zaha Hadid-designed Broad Art Museum, Beaumont Tower and the W.J. Beal Botanical Garden, begun in 1873. The Lansing River Trail links the area with more than 20 miles of paved path along the Grand and Red Cedar rivers.
