The first pedestrian mall and the Celery Flats
Kalamazoo sits midway between Chicago and Detroit. The Kalamazoo Mall on Burdick Street opened in 1959 as the first outdoor pedestrian shopping mall in the United States. The city is also the birthplace of the Gibson guitar, first built there by Orville Gibson in 1902, and home to Western Michigan University.
Portage is the largest suburb in Kalamazoo County. Its marshy muck soil once made the area a celery-growing center, a history kept at the Celery Flats Interpretive Center in Portage Creek Bicentennial Park. The Air Zoo aerospace and science museum and more than 50 miles of the Portage Bikeway round out the city.
