Lumber Queen, tulip town and Coast Guard City
Muskegon is a Lake Michigan port built where the Muskegon River meets a deep natural harbor. The city once called itself the Lumber Queen of the World, and the restored Hackley & Hume mansions recall that era. Hackley Park, given to the city in 1890, hosts concerts and festivals, and the USS Silversides submarine is moored on Muskegon Lake.
Holland was founded by Dutch settlers in 1847 and celebrates that heritage with Tulip Time each May and Dutch Winterfest downtown each winter. Its downtown snowmelt system warms about eight miles of streets and sidewalks. Grand Haven, at the mouth of the Grand River, was named Coast Guard City, USA by an Act of Congress in 1998.
